REVISION AND UPDATION OF GLOSSARIES

The Commission makes a review of glossaries from time to time and appropriate new words relating to new expressions coming up on account of scientific innovations and other developments are added to the existing glossaries to make them up to date. Updation process is extended to terms already coined in the context of their proper usage for necessary corrections and improvements. Obsolete terms that are not in usage are deleted.

Procedure adopted for updating technical terms in Hindi:

(i)

The Commission has to first identify the fields/ areas that require updation.

(ii)

For the above purpose, all glossaries and the related material that is 5 or more years old are screened.

(iii)

Whether a subject requires updation or not is decided by a ‘Recommendation Committee’.

(iv)

Subjectwise Recommendation Committees consisting of only subject experts are constituted.

(v)

The committees screen glossaries of the relevant subjects that are 5 or more years old and recommend if updation is required.

(vi)

If it is felt that there is a requirement of updation, ‘Expert Advisory Committees’ are constituted in the usual manner.

(vii)

The Expert Advisory Committee selects appropriate new words relating to new expressions coming up on account of scientific innovations and other developments. The Committee also looks into the necessity of corrections and improvements in the terms already coined in the context of their proper usage. The committee also gives recommendations regarding the deletion of obsolete terms.

(viii)

Once the terms that are to be added, modified or deleted are selected, the process of coining equivalents for terms whose Indian equivalents are not available begins.

(ix)

The procedure of evolving equivalents is same as that which is described in ‘Evolution and publication of technical terms in Hindi’

Rules and Regulations:

The rules and regulations are same as that of ‘Evolution and publication of technical terms in Hindi’ with necessary changes as applicable to this field. The members of the recommendation committee may become the members of the ‘Expert Advisory Committee' also.
